Almost Bald!

Post by nannygoat on Tue 03 May 2011, 12:57 am

Hi everyone!

I am brand new on this site and read with a lot of interest the messages pertaining to alopecia and hair thinning. I have both of these, have been using hair extensions for 17 years DIY and now I am noticing almost no hair on top of my head.

**Special note** I received high-dose chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2007 and that seems to have accelerated my hair loss.

I have tried both expensive and cheap wigs and found them very hot and hard to stay on my head. My question to everyone is: Has anyone found a special trick about applying extensions on top of the head?

I have looked at top piece hairpieces but have found them hard to color match and also expensive for human hair. Thanks for helping!!

Hello nannygoat and welcome,
and I am so sorry, I wish I had the perfect answer for you, but to be honest I myself don't have a answer or a tip, but I did read that a silk cap type wig- that is made of silk and lace that it has finest breath ability for the scalp. At the same time, this kind of cap is lightweight and cool. BUT ITS STILL A WIG ? and I so understand about wigs being hot. Sometimes even the color of the hair you wear can make it even hotter when your in out side standing around in the sun ..?
So like I said I am no help when it comes to this topic.

I sure do hope someone reads this post that can be helpful to you.
and I hope they can let you know some great ideas to help you out..
soon! Thanks for posting today!

Hello Nanny,
First of all, I hope you are well...I am sorry about your illness, and I hope you are having peace and a full recovery. My name is Magpie, and I have some pics on this forum that show my installs with the ReallyLoveIt tape method. If you have any difficulty locating it, just ask Colette. My hair loss was related to premature menopause. It was about 50 percent, and mostly diffuse.

I also explored the wig route, and I know how hot , cumbersome, and expensive that search can be. I live in Arizona.

I basically cover the positives of the method in my review. With what you describe, I think you could easily use taped in wefts and crown that with a small "topper" or "closure piece".
That way, you could let your scalp breathe by using the taped-in extension method, and still cover the hair loss on your crown.

A small human hair topper or closure would be a minor investment, as opposed to a high cost wig. And, you could take off the topper at home, but still have all the benefits of lovely breatheable extensions.. ...just my 2 cents, and I know it is just a shot in the dark....our situations are all so unique. If you need any assistance, just let me know. Best wishes, Magpie.

Toppers

Post by autm88 on Sun 30 Oct 2011, 12:16 pm

When I first started using Singers method, I had to use a topper and it worked beautifully. Hope I remember right, but am pretty sure I paid about 45 bucks for mine which I found at a local hair supply store. If all they have are dark colors, they can order a lighter shade for you. Look at all the toppers they have, even if it's the same brand. Since it's human hair, the textures vary. It had a soft, rubbery bottom that I clipped to the top of my hair through the holes( I'm assuming were meant to be sewn through) using lighter colored bobbie pins. If you cant match the color exactly, go lighter!! It's much easier to add color then take it away. When you find a color that's close, color your hair and the wefts and topper at the same time. I'm happy to report that my hair has finally come back since switching to my homemade wefts, and I no longer need to use a topper. :lipstick: If your hair is anything like mine, I found that making my wefts thinner worked so much better and last about 2 to 2 1/2 months before reinstalling. They'd last longer but I like having them closer to my scalp. Just make sure you dont take any shortcuts taking them off and use Singers tape and Gold bond glue to make and install. It lasts forever! lol No luck posting the photos of my wefts, but I'd be more than happy to email you some photos to show you how thin and undetectable I've been able to make them for my fine/thin hair.
Take care,
Audrey

Hi, My mom has breast cancer and never really got all of her hair back. Very thin/balding on top and her hair is very fragile and doesn't seem to be very attached to her head. I tried micro link extensions, but they pulled her hair out Sad If anyone has any pictures of before and after for top thinning hair with the use of these type of extensions I would be very appreciative. Thank you

Hello Seela
and I am so sorry about your mom and I just wanted to say that after reading that her hair is so thin fragile and that it is just being pulled out like that - I would think that this method might be a bit hard on her hair and she might look into toppers hair pieces. I think these days there are so many wonderful light weight wigs, falls and such that she might find a perfect one that she likes and this way she can really let her own hair grow back ..and not try methods that would put weight of any kind on her new growth.. well again I am very sorry to hear about your mom and hope she moves towards new hair growth and well being .. she will be in my prayers.. and I wish I could be more help to you today..
